Sheep follow a diurnal pattern of activity, feeding from dawn to dusk, stopping sporadically to rest and chew their cud. Sheep have a complex digestive system composed of four chambers allowing them to break down cellulose from stems, leaves, and seed hulls into simpler carbohydrates. Sheep are capable of recycling dietary and metabolic nitrogen. Feed provided to sheep must be specially formulated as they demand a high requirement of trace minerals, salt, which should be supplied with fresh water. Sheep are especially beneficial for independent producers.
